About the Artist

Kate Hendry lives and works in Melbourne, Australia. She studied Fine Arts and Asian Studies at the Australian National University before continuing her studies at the Victorian College of the Arts. She has exhibited widely in both solo and group exhibitions and her works are held in private and corporate collections in Australia and overseas. Her art practice includes abstract drawings and sculpture inspired by her interest in themes such as architecture, music and the landscape.
Hendry’s relief artworks are made from mild steel wire, which allows the artist to work as though drawing directly in space. The works are all created by hand, with each individual join made through twisting and crimping the wire with pliers. When hung or suspended, the wire artworks cast shadow lines along the walls where they are installed, evolving in complexity and density as the light shifts through the day.
Hendry's drawings also reveal the direct work of the artist's hand. The mark making is evident with each stroke, clean line and edge visible in her pencil drawings. The depth of colour in the works is built up by layering pencil marks to create density of pigment. These colour works are often paired with meticulously fine line work which is achieved through using handheld rulers and a sharpened graphite pencil.
The involved and direct artmaking process is central to Hendry's works which, whilst abstract and linear, are informed by the body as the scale and arc of movement inherent within the creation of each piece echoes the artist's physical working process.
