Hendry’s sculptures are made from mild steel wire, which allows the artist to work directly as though drawing in space. The works are created by hand, with each individual join achieved by twisting and crimping the wire with pliers.

Gifted a roll of flexible thin gauge wire from a friend’s studio clean out in the late 1990’s, Hendry embarked upon early wire relief sculptures inspired by the landscape. The material itself spoke of fencing, division of country, the passing of time, and seasonal change.

Over the decades Hendry has developed and refined her use and knowledge of the material, extending the breadth of compositions and relief structures. Some works present a hand-drawn loose quality, whilst others are more formal and exacting, with recurring curve and right angle compositions. When hung or suspended the wire artworks cast shadow lines along the walls where they are installed, evolving in complexity and density as the light shifts throughout the day.

Some works are left untreated and oxidise into a stable dark wire finish in a deep brown/black. Playful coloured pieces reveal their hue dependent upon lighting as the narrow guaged wire offers a subtle painted surface.
